To find the cause, follow the message\u2019s journey: check whether it was generated, whether the server accepted it and what happened next.<\/p>\n<p>A purchase confirmation, registration or sales inquiry may go unanswered even when the page shows a successful submission notice. Checking the form and checking email delivery are therefore different controls.<\/p>\n<h2>First distinguish three situations<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The message was not generated:<\/strong> a form or application error interrupted the process.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sending was rejected:<\/strong> the server returned an authentication, recipient, quota or other error.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The message was accepted:<\/strong> it left the system, but may still be delayed, bounce or land in spam.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A server accepting an email does not prove it is in the user\u2019s inbox. Nor does it prove they read it. Complete the form with fictional data and an address you can access. Record the time, page and result.
